Tottenham Hotspur Sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in £100 Million Club-Record Deal

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal worth up to £100 million with Newcastle United to sign midfielder Sandro Tonali, setting a new club transfer record in the process.
According to transfer insiders Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, the package is structured as £92.5 million upfront with a further £7.5 million in add-ons, believed to be tied to Tottenham Hotspur qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season.
A summer of Premier League raiding
The Tonali deal is the latest in a series of significant acquisitions Tottenham Hotspur have made from fellow Premier League clubs this summer. The move surpasses the £85 million spent to bring Mateus Fernandes from relegated West Ham United, which had briefly stood as the club's record outlay.
Spurs also recruited Andy Robertson on a free transfer after the veteran left-back left Liverpool at the end of last season, and added Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth — likewise on a free — as well as Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee in excess of £50 million.
Tonali's move to north London
Tonali made 53 appearances for Newcastle United last season, but the Magpies endured a difficult campaign, finishing 12th in the Premier League. The Italian international is now set to link up with manager Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur, with the prospect of a significant pay rise and life in London understood to have been compelling factors in his decision.
Tottenham Hotspur themselves endured a turbulent 2025/26 campaign, becoming embroiled in a relegation battle alongside West Ham United before ultimately retaining their top-flight status.
Tonali will not feature at the FIFA World Cup 2026, with Italy having failed to qualify for the tournament.
