Tottenham Hotspur are pursuing a move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with head coach Roberto De Zerbi keen to add at least one wide attacker to his ranks this summer.

De Zerbi has already reshaped his midfield and defence in an eye-catching transfer window, but the Italian is determined to go further. He confirmed last week that another high-profile signing — a player he described using the Italian word bomba — is in the pipeline, and revealed it would be an attacker. "I hope, but it's not finished for sure," he said when pressed on how close the deal was.

Liverpool's position on Gakpo

Liverpool are not prepared to let Gakpo leave without securing a replacement first. The Netherlands international still has four years remaining on his contract and the club will not entertain a cut-price sale.

Gakpo is one of the more experienced members of manager Andoni Iraola's squad and can also fill in as a centre-forward — cover that is particularly valuable while Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined with an Achilles injury.

Liverpool are expected to make a formal bid for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, though a deal will be difficult to complete. PSG are valuing the 23-year-old France international at £145 million. Should Barcola arrive and Gakpo depart, Liverpool would be left with teenager Rio Ngumoha and new signing Victor Munoz as their remaining wide options.

Savinho also on Spurs' radar

Tottenham have also explored a move for Manchester City's Brazilian winger Savinho. City are aware that Savinho wants to leave and join Spurs, but no official bid has been lodged. Savinho signed a new contract last summer, making this another costly proposition, and City would require a suitable replacement before sanctioning any departure.

Spurs' summer spending

Tottenham have already committed £237 million this transfer window, signing Sandro Tonali for a club-record £100 million after bringing in Mateus Fernandes for £85 million. De Zerbi suggested last week that two or three further additions remain possible before the window closes.

"I think Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Senesi, Robertson are bomba. For me, top players for us," De Zerbi said, clarifying that the Italian meaning of the word differs from its English connotation.
