Jo Bonfrere, the Dutch coach who guided Nigeria to Olympic gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games, has welcomed the Super Eagles' Unity Cup victory — but made clear that no domestic trophy can fill the void left by Nigeria's absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking exclusively to Completesports.com, Bonfrere praised the Super Eagles for claiming the 2026 Unity Cup Tournament title, while expressing deep regret that the three-time Africa Cup of Nations winners will not feature at the World Cup, which kicks off this month across Mexico, the USA, and Canada.

Nigeria sealed the Unity Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Jamaica on Saturday at The Valley. Alhassan Yusuf broke the deadlock in the first half, before Terem Moffi added a second-half brace to put the result beyond doubt.
