Uruguay Face World Cup 2026 Elimination Against Spain in Group H Decider

1 hour ago·2 min

Uruguay enter their final FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage fixture needing a win to keep their knockout hopes alive, but Group H leaders Spain stand in their way — and Marcelo Bielsa's men are running out of road.

A tournament in crisis for La Celeste

Few expected Uruguay to find themselves in this position. When the group draw was made, Bielsa's squad appeared capable of securing qualification with a match to spare. Instead, back-to-back draws — a 1-1 result against Saudi Arabia and a 2-2 stalemate with Cape Verde — have left them level on points with the tournament's supposed minnows, who face a far more manageable closing fixture.

A win would guarantee Uruguay a place in the round of 32. Anything less, and they risk missing out on even one of the eight available third-place spots. The pressure on Bielsa has been compounded by Darwin Nunez's muted performances — the former Liverpool centre-forward was substituted before the hour mark against Saudi Arabia and made little impression as a substitute in the Cape Verde draw. It has fallen to others to carry the attacking load, with Maxi Araujo scoring twice and providing an assist, and Agustin Canobbio also chipping in.

Spain in control but not yet firing on all cylinders

Spain arrive in Zapopan having already shown two contrasting faces at this tournament. Luis de la Fuente's side were held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde in their opener — a result few saw coming for one of the pre-tournament favourites — before responding with a commanding 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, with Lamine Yamal orchestrating the show.

The 18-year-old's influence on Spain is difficult to overstate. Even operating at roughly 80 percent fitness during that win, Yamal stretched defences and created space for Mikel Oyarzabal, who looked sharp and clinical after a quiet first outing. Nico Williams could return to the starting eleven at Estadio Akron in Zapopan, giving Spain an even more dynamic attacking threat on the opposite flank.

De la Fuente does have decisions to make in midfield, where neither Gavi nor Alex Baena have fully convinced as alternatives. Dani Olmo has looked sharper than Fabian Ruiz in that area, and the coaching staff may also look to bring Ferran Torres into form before the knockout rounds demand more from Spain's attack.

Group H standings and what is at stake

Spain lead Group H and need only to avoid defeat to advance comfortably. However, the standings are tight enough that a surprise loss could see them slip to third. For Uruguay, the equation is starker — win, and they are through; draw or lose, and their World Cup 2026 campaign may be over before the knockout rounds even begin.

FourFourTwo predicts Spain will prove too strong, forecasting a 3-1 victory that sends La Roja into the round of 32 as Group H winners.
