Virgil van Dijk has publicly confronted a Dutch journalist over claims that he personally ordered former Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman to alter the team's formation during the FIFA World Cup 2026 — calling the story «utter nonsense» in a press conference exchange that has since gone viral.

The Liverpool captain led Netherlands through the tournament before they were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the round of 32. That defeat came after Koeman switched from a back four to a back five for the Morocco fixture — a decision now at the centre of a media storm in the Netherlands.

Van Dijk denies any role in the tactical switch

«One of your colleagues also said, of course, that it was my idea to switch to playing with a back five. That is utter nonsense,» Van Dijk told the reporter directly during a press conference held ahead of Netherlands' UEFA Nations League match against Germany.

The 35-year-old went on to address accusations that he had single-handedly derailed Dutch football. «The fact is we simply failed at the World Cup. Those are the hard facts. We didn't play a good World Cup. It's not about me. You perform together. You're a team. Your claim that I destroyed Dutch football after the World Cup — that sort of thing is completely baseless.»

The Morocco match and its fallout

Netherlands had navigated the group stage with a back four, but Koeman opted for a back five when facing Morocco in the knockout round. Cody Gakpo gave Netherlands the lead, but a stoppage-time equaliser from Issa Diop forced extra-time, and Morocco ultimately prevailed on penalties.

Van Dijk was unequivocal in insisting the tactical blueprint was never his to draw. «The plan is devised by the staff. Nonsense is being spread so that I look even worse. That happens far too often,» he said. «I was told that it was my fault we played with five, that Ronald Koeman and I have destroyed Dutch football. The plan worked for 89 minutes, even though it was a bad match. The idea that I destroyed Dutch football makes absolutely no sense. I didn't decide that.»

A new chapter under Xavi

With Xavi now installed as Netherlands head coach, Van Dijk says his commitment to the national side has never wavered. He described a brief but decisive meeting with the new coach that made his continuation an easy call.

«I needed a holiday with my family and then an important meeting with the national coach. After 10 seconds it was already clear that I would continue,» Van Dijk said. «It is about trust, appreciation, how important you are for the team. Physically there is — and was — no doubt but you also want to feel appreciation and pleasure.»

Netherlands open their Nations League campaign against Germany on Thursday, with Van Dijk retaining the captain's armband under Xavi as the team begins looking ahead to Euro 2028 qualifying.
