VAR's Costly Haaland Blunder Puts Premier League Officials Under Scrutiny

44 minutes ago·1 min

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher and former Coventry striker Jay Bothroyd have questioned how VAR officials failed to correctly review Erling Haaland's winning goal for Manchester City in the Manchester derby.

The goal, which proved decisive in City's victory over rivals Manchester United, was allowed to stand despite concerns raised in the aftermath about whether the VAR process was handled correctly.

Gallagher, who officiated at the highest level of English football for years, was pointed in his assessment — arguing that referees and their video-review counterparts cannot afford lapses in concentration at any stage of a match, particularly in moments as high-stakes as a Manchester derby.
