Warri Wolves Hit With Fines, Points Deduction, and Closed-Door Matches After Referee Assault

1 hour ago·1 min

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has charged Warri Wolves following a serious security breakdown during their matchday 10 clash against Kano Pillars on Sunday at the Southern Delta University Stadium in Ozoro.

According to the NPFL's official X account, Warri Wolves failed to maintain adequate security arrangements at the venue, allowing unauthorised individuals to enter restricted areas. The situation escalated when a Warri Wolves supporter attacked the first assistant referee outside the stadium after the final whistle, leaving the official with a bleeding nose injury.

Steep financial penalties handed down

The league body issued the following sanctions against the club: a fine of N2 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security, and a further N2 million for the assault on the match official. Warri Wolves must also pay N250,000 in compensation directly to the injured assistant referee to cover his medical treatment.

Points deducted and home games closed

Beyond the financial penalties, Warri Wolves face three points and three goals deducted from their accumulated NPFL standings. The club will also be required to play their next three home fixtures behind closed doors, meaning supporters will be barred from attending those matches.

Club ordered to identify the attacker

The NPFL has instructed Warri Wolves to identify and hand over the individual responsible for the assault, along with evidence of prosecution, within seven days of the notice. The club has 48 hours from the date of the official charge to lodge an appeal against any or all of the sanctions imposed.
