Yan Diomande, a 19-year-old winger from Ivory Coast, is on the verge of completing a move to Real Madrid in a deal worth more than £100 million — a figure that simultaneously sets a new record sale for RB Leipzig, a new record signing for Real Madrid, and makes Diomande the most expensive African player in football history.

Fewer than 18 months ago, Diomande was virtually anonymous. Only scouts and insiders had heard of the slender winger who had spent time at Florida-based DME Academy, an institution better known for its basketball programme than its football output.

Trials, rejections, and a breakthrough in Spain

Diomande held trials with Chelsea, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Rangers, and Olympiacos, but each club passed on him. Even MLS reserve sides declined to offer him a contract. "Even the B teams in the MLS didn't want me," he later recalled. "I didn't even know why. They never gave me a reason. The adults handled everything. They just kept taking me all around Europe, and everybody kept saying no."

His fortunes changed when his visa expired and he returned home to Ivory Coast. La Liga side Leganes were willing to take a chance, handing him a professional contract. Within ten games in the Spanish top flight, his market value had soared, and RB Leipzig moved quickly, signing him for €20 million.

A rapid ascent through the Bundesliga

Leipzig believed they had unearthed a gem — and the evidence soon bore that out. Diomande finished his first full European season with 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions, establishing himself as one of the most electric players in the Bundesliga. He connected particularly well with right-back Ridle Baku down the flank and showed he could operate effectively on either wing, having featured on both sides for Ivory Coast at the World Cup.

Leipzig initially planned to retain Diomande for a further season to allow his value to grow. However, the level of interest from clubs including Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid made that impossible. Real Madrid ultimately won the race, despite PSG — a club Diomande admired as a child, his father being a supporter of the Paris side — appearing to be the frontrunners for much of the summer.

A story of sacrifice and heartbreak

Diomande's path to the top has been defined as much by hardship as by talent. Growing up in Abidjan, he left home at the age of nine to play for Inter Foot Sud Comoe, a club roughly 70 miles away near the Ghanaian border, where he lived largely alone with minimal resources. At 15, he left Ivory Coast entirely to pursue football in the United States, attending high school while unable to speak English.

His debut for Leganes brought him to the Santiago Bernabeu to face Real Madrid at the age of 18 — a dream realised. But that same period brought devastating personal loss: his 15-year-old sister Roxanne died shortly after that match. In a letter published by Players' Tribune in June, Diomande wrote: "Now, I don't feel anything. It's like I'm not even human. Since you died, I'm just blank." The circumstances of Roxanne's death remain unclear; Diomande was told her drink had been spiked at a party.

Agency dispute adds off-field noise

Away from football, Diomande's transfer saga has been complicated by a dispute over his representation. He had been managed by Maxidel, an agency headed by Max Gradel — a former winger and one of Ivory Coast's most-capped internationals — before switching to Jay-Z's entertainment agency Roc Nation in February. Maxidel subsequently filed a complaint with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, arguing the change violated existing agreements.

PSG ultimately withdrew from the running, publicly citing difficulties with Diomande's agency during negotiations. Roc Nation already represents Real Madrid attackers Vinicius Junior and Endrick, a connection that some observers have noted is unlikely to be a coincidence.

For all the off-field turbulence, Diomande's trajectory on the pitch remains nothing short of remarkable. A hyper-athletic, dribble-first winger with underrated passing ability and an appetite for the spectacular, he arrives at Real Madrid at 19 with every reason to believe the best is still to come.
