Yusuf Opens Super Eagles Account with Brace in Unity Cup Final Victory

3 weeks ago·2 min

Alhassan Yusuf has described scoring his first goals for the Super Eagles as a proud and memorable moment in his international career, after netting twice in Nigeria's 3-0 victory over Jamaica in the 2026 Unity Cup final on Saturday night.

How the goals came

Yusuf's opening goal arrived as early as the 4th minute, when he reacted quickest after goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke punched away a long throw-in from Kenneth Igboke on the left flank. The New England Revolution midfielder was alert and clinical to put Nigeria ahead.

His second effort was a genuine highlight-reel finish. Hamburg winger Philip Otele played him through brilliantly, and Yusuf opened his body to curl a composed strike from outside the box — a goal that drew admiration from everyone inside the stadium.

Yusuf reflects on his milestone

Speaking after the final whistle, the attacking midfielder did not hide his emotions. "I feel great to win the Unity Cup and score my first goals for the country," he said. "For sure, my family is proud."

Special praise for Chelle

Nigeria claimed back-to-back Unity Cup titles in commanding style, scoring five goals across two matches while keeping a clean sheet throughout the tournament. Yusuf credited head coach Éric Chelle for assembling and directing a largely experimental squad to consecutive triumphs.

"He did a good job to put together this team of new players. We play fantastic football," Yusuf remarked.

What comes next for the Super Eagles

Attention now turns to a pair of friendlies as Nigeria continue their preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The three-time African champions face Poland's senior men's national team at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on Wednesday, 3 June, before travelling to face former European champions Portugal at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria on Wednesday, 10 June.
