Alireza Faghani Named Referee for England vs Mexico at 2026 World Cup

England's Round of 16 clash with Mexico at the 2026 World Cup — already overshadowed by altitude concerns and thunderstorm warnings at Estadio Azteca — will be officiated by Australian referee Alireza Faghani, a figure who has attracted controversy at this very tournament.

Faghani drew widespread criticism earlier in the competition after failing to award what many considered a clear-cut penalty to Kylian Mbappe during France's opening fixture against Senegal. That call, or lack thereof, placed the 48-year-old firmly in the spotlight heading into one of the most high-profile matches of the knockout stage.

The officiating team

Faghani's fellow Australians George Lakindris and Andrew Lindsay will serve as his assistant referees. Morocco's Jalal Jayed has been appointed fourth official, with compatriot Zakaria Brinsi taking on the role of reserve assistant referee.

Faghani's record on the global stage

Despite the recent controversy, Faghani carries considerable experience at the highest level. He is perhaps best remembered internationally for overseeing France's dramatic 4-3 victory against Argentina at the 2018 World Cup — a match in which he issued eight cards and awarded a penalty inside the opening 13 minutes for a foul on a then-teenage Mbappe.

At this tournament, England vs Mexico will be his third assignment, following France vs Senegal and Portugal vs Colombia. The Portugal vs Colombia fixture was itself marked by a disputed disallowed goal deep into stoppage time.

Across his three World Cup 2026 appearances so far, Faghani has averaged close to five bookings per match and has awarded a penalty roughly every four games. He has shown the red card twice at this World Cup.

The bulk of Faghani's club-level experience comes from the A-League, where he has refereed 119 matches at an average of four cards per game. His international portfolio also includes 62 AFC Champions League Elite fixtures, eight FIFA Club World Cup matches, and three Olympic Games encounters. Most recently, he took charge of Chelsea's 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain at the 2025 Club World Cup, also held in North America.

England's tie with Mexico has generated more pre-match debate than any other Round of 16 fixture, with concerns over Mexico City's altitude and the threat of an evening thunderstorm compounding the challenge facing Thomas Tuchel's side.
