Julian Alvarez is running out of options in what has become one of the most fraught transfer sagas of the summer. Atletico Madrid have made their position clear: they will not sell the Argentine striker to Barcelona under any circumstances, leaving him with a stark choice — commit to his current club or pursue a move to Premier League champions Arsenal.

Sources close to the situation describe Alvarez as "devastated" after Atletico reiterated their refusal to facilitate a deal with their LaLiga rivals. The mood around the player has darkened further following his reception at Atletico's opening LaLiga fixture, where supporters booed him off the pitch against Villarreal.

A tense standoff

Atletico journalist and expert Ruben Uría told Sky Sports News that the atmosphere has grown increasingly volatile. "Neither Miguel Gil Marín, CEO of Atletico Madrid, nor the Apollo board want to sell the player to Barcelona," he said. "The entire Apollo board supports Gil Marín's decision. Alvarez has been told."

Uría confirmed that Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has maintained contact with his former employers at Atletico in recent days, keeping the door open for a potential move to north London. However, Arsenal are not placing their hopes on securing Alvarez before the September 1 deadline and are not currently expecting a deal to be completed at the Emirates.

Arsenal's conditions

Before any formal negotiations can begin, Arsenal require Alvarez to set aside his ambitions of joining Barcelona and demonstrate a genuine desire to be part of manager Mikel Arteta's project. Until that shift in mindset occurs, talks are unlikely to progress.

Should Alvarez come around to the idea of joining Arsenal, Atletico are believed to be willing to consider offers in the region of £130 million (€150 million). A transfer of that magnitude would make it the tenth signing in Premier League history to exceed £100 million — and the fourth such deal of the current summer window, following Morgan Rogers' switch to Chelsea, Elliot Anderson's move to Manchester City, and Sandro Tonali's arrival at Tottenham.

Blame and deadlock

Uría outlined the contrasting narratives between the two parties. "Julian and his agent believe that everything that's happening is the fault of Gil Marín, who publicly asked them to say they wanted to leave Atletico," he explained. "For their part, Atletico argue that Julian already knew how the club played under Diego Simeone when he signed, that he knew what contract he was signing and what its release clause was, and they deny ever telling him he could leave for a direct rival."

With the transfer window drawing to a close, Uría was unambiguous about what lies ahead for Alvarez. "There are only two paths: stay at Atletico Madrid to fulfil his contract or listen to Arsenal's offer and sign for the London club. Julian will have to make his decision."
