The Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) has announced a novelty football match on 1 August 2026 to mark the second anniversary of the death of its former chairman, the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Ralph Chidozie George, chairman of the ANSFA Media Committee, confirmed the event will be held at the FC Ifeanyi Ubah Stadium on Ozubulu Road, Nnewi.

A chairman who transformed Anambra football

Senator Ifeanyi 'Ebubechukwu Uzo' Ubah led the ANSFA from 2016 to 2020, a period widely credited with bringing meaningful progress to football development across the state.

Among his most celebrated initiatives was the 'One Family, One Footballer' project, launched in both Nigeria and Russia during the 2018 FIFA World Cup — an event attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

In August 2016, he secured a landmark partnership agreement with English Premier League club West Ham United, which he described as a deal set to transform his club, Nigerian football, and African football as a whole.

That same year, FC Ifeanyi Ubah clinched the 2016 President Federation Cup, defeating Nasarawa United 5-4 in the final at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. The trophy earned the club qualification for the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup.

Remembering the Capital Oil and Gas chairman

Senator Ubah, who also led Capital Oil and Gas, passed away on 27 July 2024. The ANSFA board under chairman Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi has now finalised arrangements for the commemorative match as a tribute to his enduring contribution to football in Anambra State and beyond.
