Argentina Survive Cape Verde Scare to Reach World Cup Last 16

Argentina are through to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 — but only just. The reigning champions needed extra time and a cruel own goal to see off Cape Verde 3-2 in a pulsating Round of 32 encounter at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, avoiding what would have been the greatest upset in tournament history.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a finish of the highest class, and for a time it looked as though the match would follow its expected course. But Cape Verde — the lowest-ranked nation ever to reach the knockout rounds — had other ideas entirely.
Cape Verde stun the champions — twice
Deroy Duarte drew the underdogs level in the 59th minute, squeezing a composed effort into the far corner to send shockwaves through a stadium of 64,478. Argentina's response was sluggish and disjointed, and goalkeeper Vozinha produced a string of outstanding saves to deny Messi — most notably from two dangerous free-kicks in the closing stages.
Lisandro Martínez appeared to settle nerves when he whipped a shot into the top right corner in the 92nd minute, restoring Argentina's lead at the start of extra time. But the drama was far from over.
Sidny Lopes Cabral then produced a moment that stopped the footballing world in its tracks — curling a breathtaking strike into the net in the 103rd minute to draw Cape Verde level for the second time. It was, by any measure, a candidate for goal of the tournament.
Borges own goal breaks Cape Verde hearts
With the prospect of a historic elimination looming over Lionel Scaloni's side, Cristian Romero rose to meet a corner and his header deflected off Diney Monteiro Sanches Borges in the 111th minute to finally put Argentina out of reach. The own goal was as brutal a way to exit as the sport can produce.
Argentina will face Egypt in the last 16. The story of the tournament, however, belongs to Cape Verde.
A nation of just over 600,000 people — roughly a fifth of the population of Buenos Aires — arrived in the United States as relative unknowns making their debut on the World Cup's biggest stage. They leave it having pushed Spain, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, and Argentina to their limits, carrying memories and performances that will endure long after the final whistle of 2026 has blown.
