Atletico Madrid have drawn a firm line under any prospect of selling Julian Alvarez to Barcelona, leaving the 26-year-old striker with a stark choice: commit to the club or engineer a move to Arsenal before the transfer window closes.

Atletico's public statement

The Spanish club issued an unambiguous statement on Thursday, declaring that Barcelona had failed to conduct themselves in a "professional, ethical and respectful manner" and that, as a result, there would be "zero consideration" of any deal involving Alvarez.

Atletico had already gone on record with Spanish sports newspaper Marca, insisting the situation was a matter of principle rather than price. "There is a zero-per-cent chance of selling him to Barcelona — it's not about money, it's about dignity," the club told Marca.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta had only heightened tensions by publicly reaffirming his club's desire to sign Alvarez in an interview on Wednesday, the same day the striker missed training due to illness following a poor night's sleep — an absence unrelated to his contractual situation, according to reports.

Supporters turn on Alvarez

Relations between Alvarez and the Atletico faithful have deteriorated sharply. After the striker's wish to leave became public knowledge, fans booed him from the pitch following a 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday — a sign of how strained the atmosphere has become at the club.

Atletico expert and journalist Ruben Uria described the situation as "extremely tense" and said Atletico's statement carried a direct message for the player. "Either you go to London, or you stay. We will never negotiate with Barcelona," Uria said. "It's very clear — Julian decides. London or staying in Madrid."

Arsenal's cautious stance

Arsenal, for their part, are treating a deal as unlikely before the deadline. The Premier League champions would need clear encouragement from Alvarez himself before entering formal negotiations with Atletico. Sporting director Andrea Berta and Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin maintain an ongoing dialogue — the two worked together at Atletico in the past and remain close — but that alone has not been enough to push discussions forward.

Atletico are simultaneously preparing contingency plans. Among the strikers attracting their interest is Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres, with the Spanish club keen to gauge how willing Arsenal might be to sell him. Nicolas Jackson had also been considered, but he is on his way to Aston Villa.

A stepping stone to Barcelona?

South American football expert Tim Vickery suggested on Sky Sports News that Arsenal could represent an attractive proposition for Alvarez despite his initial reluctance. "Arsenal would give a fantastic narrative. Why not try to be part of the first Champions League at Arsenal?" Vickery said. "Depending on the terms of the contract, Arsenal could be a stepping stone to Barcelona."

Vickery also noted Alvarez's broader predicament: "He has got himself in a place where there are not many options. Clearly, they wouldn't sell to Barcelona and wouldn't sell to Real Madrid if they were interested. Who else could afford him? The other options are in the Premier League."

The next 24 to 48 hours are considered pivotal. Atletico are eager to resolve the matter before deadline day, and Alvarez must decide whether to rebuild bridges with the club or press ahead with an exit — one that now leads only to north London.
