Ryan Babel, the former Liverpool forward, believes the UEFA Champions League has the power to unlock a deeper level of motivation within the squad — and that facing Atlético Madrid could be the catalyst the Reds need.

Speaking to TribalFootball, the ex-Netherlands international pointed to the unique intensity the competition generates, arguing that a strong showing in Europe could carry Liverpool forward across all fronts this season.

"The Champions League can unlock a different level of focus and motivation for players and a manager. Everyone wants to play in it, and for a team like Liverpool, it often brings out a different level of desire."

Liverpool have a mixed record against the Spanish side, winning four of their nine previous encounters, with Atlético claiming three of those meetings. Babel insists that the draw, rather than being a headache, represents a genuine opportunity.

"I think the Champions League draw can be a real positive to Liverpool's season. They can slowly grow into the tournament, find their form and their shape. In my opinion, it is a draw they shouldn't complain about."

A boost, not a distraction

Babel is clear that the competition should be viewed as a complement to Liverpool's Premier League ambitions, not a burden on them. He described the European campaign as a bonus — one that could sharpen the squad's edge rather than dilute their domestic focus.

"I think the competition could be beneficial to their overall season and has to be seen as a bonus and not a distraction from the Premier League."

The former forward also highlighted the prospect of hosting Atlético, managed by Andoni Iraola, as a statement occasion for the club. He compared football's unpredictable nature to the flip of a coin — suggesting that one big result can shift momentum in an instant.

"Playing Atletico Madrid at home is potentially the biggest game and can give the squad a boost and extra confidence. It shows the world that Liverpool is still there. Football is like a coin, you flip it and sometimes it falls on the right side for you, and all of a sudden everything can change in a positive way."
