BBC Launches 'Stay Up or Catch Up' Plan for England v Mexico World Cup Tie

The BBC has announced a dedicated viewing plan for its coverage of England's last-16 clash against Mexico at the FIFA World Cup 2026, acknowledging that the 01:00 BST kick-off on Monday presents a challenge for many fans.
How to watch
The match will be broadcast exclusively live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with presenter Kelly Cates alongside pundits Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart, and Micah Richards. For those unable to stay up, a full spoiler-free replay will air on BBC Two from 07:10 BST, with an on-demand version available on BBC iPlayer from 06:00 BST.
BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds will carry live commentary throughout, while live text updates and in-match clips will be accessible on the BBC Sport website and app. An extended 15-minute highlights package will also be released on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport Football YouTube channel.
BBC Sport director speaks out
BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski explained the thinking behind the initiative. "World Cup knockout football is absolutely unmissable, but a 1:00am kick-off isn't realistic for everyone," he said. "Whether you're staying up to watch every minute live or waking up to catch every moment spoiler-free, BBC Sport has you covered this Monday."
England riding high on record viewing figures
The announcement comes off the back of extraordinary audience numbers. England's dramatic 2-1 victory over DR Congo in the last-32 round drew a peak of 16.3 million viewers, making the 17:00 BST tie the most watched moment on the BBC so far this year. An average of 14 million people followed the match on BBC TV.
Earlier in the tournament, the Croatia opener and the win over Panama — both shown on ITV — attracted peaks of 15.4 million and 13.8 million respectively. England's draw with Ghana pulled in a peak of 15.4 million on the BBC.
Tuchel urges the nation to tune in
England manager Thomas Tuchel has called on parents to allow their children to stay up for the Mexico tie. "There's so much school to go to, but the World Cup is every four years. Let them watch," Tuchel said after the win over DR Congo. "There will be a big match in four days, and we need the support of everyone, especially the children." Pubs across England and Wales have also been granted permission to remain open until 05:00 on Monday for the occasion.
