When West Ham were relegated from the Premier League in May, few expected their captain to follow them into the Championship. Jarrod Bowen, however, made his choice clear on July 17, adjusting his contract to confirm his commitment to the club for the 2026/27 season — a deal that still runs until 2030.

The 29-year-old had been instrumental throughout the club's ill-fated top-flight campaign, starting all but a handful of matches and registering nine goals and 11 assists in an effort that ultimately proved insufficient to keep West Ham up. Talks with other clubs took place, but Bowen chose to stay.

'No one needed to sell this club to me'

"I thought about what the biggest 'what if?' would be when I retire," Bowen told Sky Sports. "I knew I had to give it a go to get this club back into the Premier League. That was the overriding factor."

Bowen travelled to Prague over the summer to meet West Ham's largest shareholder, Daniel Kretinsky. He described the meeting as "an honest conversation" rather than a sales pitch, insisting no persuasion was needed. He also dismissed any suggestion that his wife Dani Dyer and father-in-law Danny Dyer — both lifelong West Ham supporters — had swayed him. "They are never going to be in my ear saying 'I think you should stay or I think you should go'," he said.

"I've come on leaps and bounds as a person and a player since I've been here. The fans have felt a connection to me, I've felt a connection to the fans — and it's just been right."

World Cup heartbreak on top of relegation

Bowen's personal form across 2025/26 was remarkable. In 42 appearances across all competitions, he contributed 11 goals and 12 assists — one involvement every other game. England manager Thomas Tuchel had picked him for eight of his first 12 games in charge, making his omission from the FIFA World Cup 2026 squad, announced on May 22, all the more painful.

"It was difficult to watch to begin with because I felt like I deserved to be there," Bowen admitted. "That weekend was the worst a footballer could have — missing out on the England squad on the Friday, then getting relegated on Sunday."

Despite the double blow, the West Ham captain insists he is ready for the season ahead. "I'm stood here fit, healthy and ready to go again," he said.

'As long as we get promoted, I don't care how we do it'

Bowen is no stranger to second-tier football. Before joining West Ham, he spent two-and-a-half seasons in the Championship with Hull, scoring 52 goals and contributing 12 assists in 117 appearances. He knows the division's demands intimately.

"It's one of the toughest leagues to get out of because it's so demanding, so physical," he warned. "You can be doing well and go to a side bottom of the table and they turn you over. You have to earn the right to be dominant — you can't just walk in thinking you're the biggest side and go straight up."

West Ham lost key attackers Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville this summer, but Bowen remains the focal point of their promotion push. He is not fixated on winning the Championship title — automatic promotion or a play-off place will be equally welcome.

"I'd love to sit here in a year's time and say we've won the league, but as long as we're in the Premier League, I couldn't care how we do it," he said.

A release clause and a clear focus

According to The Athletic, Bowen's renegotiated deal includes a release clause that activates next summer if West Ham fail to win promotion, as well as a substantial bonus should they succeed. Bowen, though, is focused only on the immediate task.

"My dream, my ambition, is to get this club back to the Premier League," he said. "When you start looking years in advance, you're not focused on what you want to do this season. I'm living in the present, not years to come."
