Burnley Appoint Fabio Celestini as Head Coach After Hayen Sacking

Burnley have named Fabio Celestini as their new head coach, just four days after parting ways with Nicky Hayen.
The 50-year-old arrives at Turf Moor with a strong pedigree in Swiss football, having guided FC Basel to a domestic double in 2024-25 — winning both the Swiss Super League title and the Swiss Cup. His most recent role came at CSKA Moscow, where he claimed the Russian Super Cup.
Celestini wasted no time in setting out his vision for the struggling Clarets. "I look at Burnley and I see a club with big potential and players with real quality, who can help us achieve our supporters' ambitions," he said. "I know the situation we are in, and I have lived it before. Our supporters deserve to see a team playing with belief from the first whistle."
A club in deep trouble
The task facing Celestini is a daunting one. Burnley have managed just one league win since returning to the Championship, leaving them rooted in 22nd place in the table. Their struggles are not new — a difficult Premier League campaign last season set the tone, and the club have gone over a year without a home league victory.
The appointment comes days after Hayen was dismissed following a heavy 4-1 defeat to Lincoln City. Earlier this week, Diego Lopez was installed as director of football, with finding a new manager his first major assignment — a task he has now completed.
Lopez backs his appointment
Lopez was full of praise for Celestini, insisting the new coach was determined to take on the challenge at Burnley. "Fabio brings the passion, experience and knowledge we were looking for," he said. "He showed extraordinary determination and conviction to come to Burnley. We want people who truly want to be here and help this club grow. Fabio is a clear example of that."
Celestini now faces an immediate challenge to drag Burnley away from the relegation zone and restore belief to a fanbase that has endured a torrid run of form on both sides of the top-flight divide.
