Cape Verde Join Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal in Exclusive World Cup Knockout Club

1 hour ago·2 min

Cape Verde have etched their name into football history, becoming only the fourth African nation to reach the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup on their debut — a feat that places them alongside Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal.

The Blue Sharks secured their place in the round of 32 after a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia in their final Group H fixture in the early hours of Saturday. Cape Verde finished second in the group on three points, enough to advance automatically.

Spain claimed top spot on seven points, having beaten Uruguay 1-0 in the other Group H decider. Both Uruguay and Saudi Arabia — each on two points — have been eliminated.

A historic African milestone

Cape Verde now share this rare distinction with three other African sides: Nigeria's Super Eagles, Ghana's Black Stars, and Senegal's Teranga Lions — all of whom advanced from the group stage in their respective World Cup debuts.

Nigeria were the trailblazers, making their World Cup bow at the 1994 edition in the United States. Under Dutch coach Clemens Westerhof, the Super Eagles topped a group containing Argentina, Bulgaria, and debutants Greece before falling 2-1 to a ten-man Italy side in the round of 16.

Senegal produced arguably the most dazzling debut of all at the 2002 World Cup, co-hosted by South Korea and Japan. The Teranga Lions stunned holders France 1-0, drew with Denmark (1-1) and Uruguay (3-3), and finished second with five points. They went further than any of the four, reaching the quarterfinals before losing 1-0 to Turkey via a golden goal.

Ghana followed in 2006 in Germany, drawn into a formidable Group E alongside Italy, Czech Republic, and USA. Despite a 2-0 opening defeat to Italy, the Black Stars recovered to beat Czech Republic 2-0 and USA 2-1 to reach the round of 16. There, a star-studded Brazil side — featuring Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and Kaká — proved too strong, winning 3-0.

Now Cape Verde join that distinguished company, adding another proud chapter to African football's World Cup story.
