Cardiff City have confirmed the return of left-back Calum Scanlon on a season-long loan from Liverpool, reuniting the 21-year-old with the club he helped win promotion earlier this year.

Scanlon first joined the Bluebirds in February and featured eight times in League One as Cardiff secured an immediate return to the Championship. His performances during that run convinced the club to bring him back for the full 2026-27 campaign under manager Brian Barry-Murphy.

The defender expressed genuine enthusiasm about his return to South Wales. "I'm grateful for the experience I've already had here and I can't wait to make new memories at the club," he said. Scanlon had signed a new contract with Liverpool before sealing this loan arrangement.

Ready for the challenge ahead

Having featured for Liverpool during pre-season, Scanlon arrives at Cardiff with momentum. "I'm ready to go, it's been a positive pre-season getting minutes," he said. "It was good for me. My body is ready for the season."

He previously had a loan spell at Millwall, and Liverpool have chosen to send him out again to accumulate senior experience. At Cardiff, he will compete for the starting berth with Joel Bagan.

Scanlon becomes Cardiff's third senior addition of the summer. Goalkeeper Nathan Trott's loan from Copenhagen was made permanent, and midfielder Jack Moylan arrived from Lincoln City to complete the trio.

Cardiff opened their pre-season with a Carabao Cup victory over Swindon and now face a stern test in their Championship opener — a Monday-night home derby against Welsh rivals Wrexham, kicking off at 20:00 BST.
