Carrick Backs Bruno Fernandes Amid Man Utd's Relegation Fears

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has thrown his full support behind captain Bruno Fernandes, insisting the midfielder's dedication to the club is "undoubted" and that he remains "as good as ever."
The relationship between Fernandes and Carrick came under intense scrutiny after the captain was dropped to the bench for October's home defeat against Bournemouth. That benching followed a public dispute between Fernandes and the coaching staff in the aftermath of United's 4-1 Champions League thrashing away at Como.
Fernandes was recalled for the Premier League loss to Chelsea, and he made an immediate impact a week later — scoring a retaken penalty that ignited a dramatic second-half fightback against Roma on Tuesday.
Fernandes denies rift with Carrick
Speaking after the Roma victory, Fernandes pushed back against reports of a breakdown in his relationship with Carrick, saying there had been "a lot of lies" written about the situation. The 32-year-old also disputed claims — reportedly confirmed by club sources — that the two had held "clear-the-air talks."
Carrick, however, pointed to Fernandes' performance as evidence enough that all was well between them.
"I think his actions, the way he's played and how he dealt with even retaking the penalty and frame of mind he was in for that, tells [you] everything. Bruno's as good as ever," Carrick said.
The head coach declined to reveal the specifics of any private conversations held at Carrington, but acknowledged that internal dialogue — both individual and collective — is a routine part of life at the club.
"Bruno's commitment is undoubted for me in terms of what he brings to this team and this club," he added.
Relegation battle looms large
The victory over Roma provided brief relief, but United's broader situation remains precarious. Carrick's side have managed only one win in nine Premier League games — a narrow success against Ipswich in August — and face a defining 90 minutes against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.
It is understood that United's decision-makers plan to assess the managerial position following that match. Carrick, who acknowledged he is uncertain about his future, used the club's matchday programme to call for consistency after Tuesday's win.
"We must be ready to show that we can back up Tuesday's victory and begin to create the momentum to give ourselves something to build on after the international break," he wrote.
The stakes were sharpened further when Nottingham Forest beat Manchester City 3-1 — a result that means United will drop into the relegation zone over the international break if they fail to defeat Villa on Sunday.
