Chelsea welcome Leeds United to Stamford Bridge in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with two Premier League sides managed by former Bundesliga coaches squaring off in an all-top-flight tie.

The stakes for both sides

Xabi Alonso suffered his first defeat as Chelsea manager when the Blues fell at Arsenal on Sunday, making passage through to the fourth round a priority at home. Chelsea arrive here in good shape overall, however — their squad depth is expected to give them a decisive edge over their visitors.

Leeds United travel to west London on the back of an unbeaten start to their Premier League campaign. Manager Daniel Farke's side have won once and drawn twice in the league so far, and a result at Stamford Bridge would extend that run and send them into the round of 16 of a competition they last won back in 1968.

How both sides got here

Leeds booked their place in this round with a convincing second-round win at Nottingham Forest, while Chelsea were given a home draw against League One side Luton Town in the previous round — winning 2-0. Danny Welbeck scored his first goal for the club in that victory.

Leeds' record away at Stamford Bridge makes difficult reading for Farke. The West Yorkshire side have not won there since December 1999, when a Stephen McPhail brace — sandwiched around Frank Leboeuf's red card — helped Leeds push for the Premier League title. In Carabao Cup history, Chelsea won at Elland Road in both 2001 and 2012, and the two clubs also met in the FA Cup final during the 1969-70 season.
