Chelsea produced one of the most extraordinary Carabao Cup performances in recent memory, scoring six second-half goals to overturn a two-goal deficit and defeat Leeds United 6-3 in a breathless third-round tie at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds had looked well on course to cause an upset, with Tarik Muharemovic's opener and Brendon Aaronson's strike two minutes after half-time leaving the hosts 2-0 down and facing an early exit from their first real cup test under Xabi Alonso.

Rogers runs the show

Alonso's bold decision to introduce Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto, and Reece James at half-time transformed the contest. It was Rogers who proved the catalyst, contributing four assists as Chelsea ripped through Leeds' defence in a stunning 41-minute spell.

Palmer converted a penalty in the 53rd minute and added a second two minutes later, before Neto made it three. A blistering seven-minute burst had flipped the scoreline entirely, and Danny Welbeck extended Chelsea's lead to 4-2 by slipping his shot through Michael Zetterer's legs.

Leeds refuse to go quietly

Even then, chaos rather than control continued to define the evening. Leeds refused to fold, continuing to create openings, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back in the 75th minute to set up a nervy finale at 4-3.

Valentin Barco eventually settled Chelsea's nerves by blasting in from close range — from yet another Rogers assist — to make it 5-3 in the 80th minute. Welbeck then applied the definitive finish deep in added time, nodding home Barco's wildly mishit effort beyond Zetterer to complete a 6-3 scoreline.

Alonso's lessons learned

It was a goal that perfectly encapsulated the evening — equal parts brilliance and disorder. Alonso will have noted the defensive vulnerabilities his side continue to expose, but a place in the next round is secured and, for now, the chaos is producing results.
