Clement Turpin Named Referee for Colombia vs Ghana World Cup Clash

Experienced French referee Clement Turpin has been appointed to officiate the high-stakes World Cup knockout tie between Colombia and Ghana, with a place in the round of 16 against Switzerland on the line.
The match at stake
The winner of this encounter at Kansas City Stadium will advance to face Switzerland in Kansas City on July 7. Nestor Lorenzo's Colombia — who topped Group K ahead of Portugal — are making their third knockout-stage appearance in as many World Cup tournaments.
Ghana, meanwhile, secured their spot in the last round thanks to finishing among the eight best third-placed teams, claiming four points from Group L. It marks the Black Stars' third deep run at a World Cup in 20 years.
Who is Clement Turpin?
Turpin, 44, has held FIFA referee status since 2010 and joined UEFA's Elite group in 2012. Over the course of his career, he has accumulated 674 competitive matches, the majority in his native Ligue 1, though he is equally at home in the biggest international fixtures.
He arrives at this World Cup having already refereed two group-stage matches in the tournament, and his global assignment list stretches back across three World Cups in total. At the European Championship level, Turpin has officiated matches in both the 2021 and 2024 editions.
Perhaps most notably, the Frenchman presided over back-to-back European finals — the 2021 UEFA Europa League decider, followed by the UEFA Champions League final in Paris just 12 months later — a distinction reserved for only the most trusted officials on the continent.
When it comes to discipline, Turpin is measured: his yellow card rate averages just over three per game, making him one of the more restrained referees on the FIFA list.
The officiating team
Turpin will be flanked by fellow Frenchmen Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pages as assistants. The fourth official role goes to Spain's Alejandro Hernandez, with compatriot Jose Enrique Naranjo serving as reserve assistant referee.
Whichever side prevails will find Switzerland waiting — the Swiss having already secured their last-16 berth with a 2-0 victory over Algeria.
