Drew Fischer Named Referee for Argentina vs Cape Verde at Copa América

1 hour ago·1 min

Canadian official Drew Fischer will take charge of the Copa América round-of-16 clash between Argentina and Cape Verde at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Fischer, 45, has built a reputation as one of MLS's most respected referees and brings significant experience to this high-profile assignment. He officiated the MLS Cup final last year and served as a VAR official at the 2022 World Cup.

Fischer's tournament record so far

This will be Fischer's third match of the current tournament. He previously oversaw France's 3-0 victory over Iraq and Croatia's 2-1 win over Ghana in the group stage. In the Croatia-Ghana fixture, he awarded Ghana's goal only after a lengthy pitchside VAR review.

Assisting Fischer on the touchlines will be fellow Canadians Micheal Barwegen and Lyes Arfa as assistant referees. Mexico's Katia Garcia has been appointed fourth official, with compatriot Sandra Ramirez serving as reserve official.

VAR panel for the match

American Armando Villarreal will lead the VAR booth, supported by Croatia's Ivan Bebek and Nicaragua's Tatiana Guzman.

The match itself

World champions Argentina enter the contest as heavy favourites, with Lionel Messi effectively playing on home turf given the match's Florida location. Keeping Messi — the tournament's all-time top scorer — subdued will represent an enormous challenge for Cape Verde.

Nevertheless, Cape Verde arrive at this stage having demonstrated real resilience in the group phase, earning draws against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia to advance. Their progress is a genuine achievement, and they will be hoping the officiating gives them no additional obstacles to overcome.
