Ecuador Stun Germany to Reach World Cup Knockouts, Dent Scotland's Hopes

1 hour ago·1 min

Ecuador pulled off one of the tournament's biggest upsets, beating an already-qualified Germany side 2-1 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to advance to the World Cup knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams.

The result carries significant consequences for Scotland, whose hopes of joining the round of 32 have taken a serious blow — Steve Clarke's side now occupy the final eighth third-place spot with other groups yet to conclude.

A dramatic comeback

Germany appeared to be doing Scotland a favour when Leroy Sane broke the deadlock inside the opening two minutes, giving the Tartan Army early cause for optimism.

That hope proved short-lived. Nilson Angulo, of Sunderland, drew Ecuador level with a composed finish just seven minutes later, resetting the contest entirely.

The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata prodded home to complete a stunning comeback and send Ecuador through at Germany's expense. Wild celebrations erupted across the stadium among Ecuador's supporters.

Ecuador's route and England's picture

Ecuador's place among the best third-placed sides means they are now potential round of 32 opponents for England, should the Three Lions finish top of Group L.

For Germany, already through to the knockout rounds before kick-off, the defeat carries no immediate consequence to their own progression — though the manner of the loss will concern coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Scotland's fate now rests on results elsewhere, as Clarke's side wait anxiously to discover whether their third-place tally is enough to survive the group stage.
