Ederson Transfer to Manchester United Thrown Into Doubt

1 hour ago·2 min

Manchester United's pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson has hit a significant obstacle, with one source telling BBC Sport the deal is off — though both clubs deny a final decision has been reached.

United agreed a £35 million fee for the 27-year-old Brazil international on 2 June, with the intention of completing the transfer before pre-season training began. A medical was scheduled for early July, but those plans were disrupted after Ederson received a late call-up to Carlo Ancelotti's World Cup squad.

Medical concerns cloud the deal

It was expected that Ederson would undergo his medical once Brazil had been eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2026. Brazil were subsequently knocked out by Norway, and United sources privately confirmed the medical would proceed once the tournament ended.

However, no update on Ederson has emerged, even as Chelsea's Andrey Santos and former Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow moved closer to completing their respective moves to Old Trafford within the past 48 hours. Sources have indicated that medical tests revealed a potential issue with the deal, with one source stating the transfer has collapsed. Ederson is believed to still be in the United States.

A difficult summer at Old Trafford

Should the Ederson deal fall through, it would represent another painful blow in what has been a turbulent transfer window for United. The club finished third last season and entered the summer with Champions League football to prepare for after a two-year absence from Europe's premier club competition.

Their first priority was defensive reinforcement, but their bid for Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson ended when his fee escalated to £116 million — a figure United were not prepared to pay.

United then switched focus to Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United, only to find the situation complicated by a change in leadership at the London club, which reduced their urgency to sell. When Tottenham Hotspur also entered the race, the price rose to £85 million. United did submit an offer at that figure, but it included add-ons rather than guaranteed payments, and Fernandes ultimately chose Tottenham Hotspur.

With the Ederson situation unresolved, supporters are left waiting to learn whether the club's most advanced piece of summer business will ultimately go through.
