Egypt have formally complained to FIFA over the refereeing during their FIFA World Cup 2026 last-16 defeat to Argentina, Sky Sports News understands. The Egyptian FA are also calling for the removal of referee Francois Letexier from the remainder of the tournament.
Egypt fell 3-2 in a dramatic encounter in Atlanta on Tuesday, with Enzo Fernandez settling the tie with a header in the 92nd minute after Argentina scored three goals in the space of 13 minutes to overturn a 2-0 deficit.
Egypt's penalty fury
Head coach Hossam Hassan argued that his side were denied two clear penalties in the closing stages. Moments before Fernandez's winner, Julian Alvarez challenged Mohamed Salah inside the area, catching the forward on his foot — an incident VAR did not appear to review.
Earlier, Alexis Mac Allister appeared to pull down Hamdi Fathy inside the box, yet the referee allowed play to continue without a VAR check. Egypt also had a goal from Zico disallowed after a VAR review determined that Lisandro Martinez had been fouled in the build-up, with the score at 1-0.
