Parkinson Urges Wrexham to Stay Patient in Quiet Transfer Window

45 minutes ago·2 min

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has called on his squad to remain patient as the club navigates a subdued start to the summer transfer window, with no new arrivals made so far.

The Championship side is preparing to travel to the United States later this month for three pre-season fixtures. Parkinson admitted he would welcome fresh signings before the tour departs, but insisted the club would not rush into deals simply to fill numbers.

"As ever it's patience, making sure we can hold our nerve to get the right players in who we feel can make a difference," Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales.

Wrexham are scheduled to face Leeds in Tampa on Sunday, 26 July, before taking on Liverpool in New York and Sunderland in Pennsylvania. Parkinson drew comparisons to last year's pre-season trip to Australia, where the club continued its recruitment work throughout without letting it destabilise preparations.

Departures shaping the squad

The window has already seen outgoings from the Stok Cae Ras. Fan favourite Paul Mullin departed by mutual consent last month, while midfielder Tom O'Connor completed a permanent transfer to Peterborough United. Parkinson also confirmed that Mo Faal has joined Port Vale on a year-long loan, with one or two further exits expected.

"Of course, along that journey players are going to have to go because of numbers which we've worked on with Paul going," Parkinson said.

Squad Cost Rules adding complexity

Parkinson cited two factors behind the slow pace of business — the newly introduced Squad Cost Rules (SCR), which have replaced the previous profit and sustainability framework across the Championship, and the ongoing FIFA World Cup, which has disrupted the transfer market more broadly.

"We've got to operate within the rules and we're working on ways to do that to give us the best squad going forward," he said.

Despite the quiet start, Parkinson struck an optimistic tone about the group already at his disposal. He acknowledged that the Championship will be more competitive this season, pointing to relegated clubs and improving rivals, but rejected any suggestion that Wrexham would stand still.

"We know we've got to work on the squad, and we will do, but it's going to take a bit of time," Parkinson said.

Wrexham came close to promotion last season and Parkinson is determined to build on that platform — carefully, and on his own terms.
