Egypt Reach Historic World Cup Last 16 After Penalty Win Over Australia

Egypt are through to the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties, following a gripping 1-1 draw at Dallas Stadium on Friday. It is one of the greatest moments in the Pharaohs' World Cup history.
Ashour fires Egypt ahead
Australia nearly stunned the Pharaohs inside five minutes when Cristian Volpato cracked a powerful drive against the crossbar. Egypt responded with conviction, however, and took the lead in the 13th minute. Karim Hafez delivered a precise cross from the left flank, and Emam Ashour rose to head firmly past the Australian goalkeeper. Ashour, who would later claim the man-of-the-match award, was commanding throughout in both attack and defence.
Egypt settled into a disciplined defensive shape to protect their advantage. Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir remained alert, including a confident hold of a Aziz Behich strike in the 35th minute, as the Socceroos pressed without finding a way through in the first half.
Own goal hands Australia a lifeline
The decisive moment of the second half came not from Australia's attackers but from an Egyptian error. Early in the second period, Mustafa Zico released Omar Marmoush in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper, but Marmoush dragged his shot wide — a miss that would prove costly.
Australia equalised in the 55th minute through a set-piece. Mohamed Hany, attempting to clear a dangerous free-kick delivery, headed the ball past Shobeir and into his own net. The own goal shifted the momentum, and Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan responded with substitutions — bringing on Hossam Abdel-Maguid and Haitham Hassan, before Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet replaced the injured Hafez.
Extra time — Egypt dominate but cannot convert
Neither side broke the deadlock in extra time, though Egypt created the clearer opportunities. Rami Rabia went close in stoppage time, meeting a Mohamed Salah cross with a firm header that the Australian goalkeeper turned behind. In the additional 30 minutes, Salah and Haitham Hassan both threatened, but Australia defended deep and held out to force a shootout.
Shootout glory for the Pharaohs
Egypt were nerveless from the spot. Mahmoud Saber, Rabia, Salah, and Abdel-Maguid all converted their kicks. For Australia, Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both missed, handing Egypt a 4-2 shootout victory and sending the Pharaohs into the last 16.
Egypt had featured in a 16-team World Cup back in 1934 but failed to advance from the group stage in their 1990 and 2018 appearances. This squad has now made history by progressing through the knockout rounds of the expanded modern tournament.
Egypt's next challenge
The Pharaohs will face the winner of Argentina's tie against Cape Verde at Atlanta Stadium on 7 July. For the African continent, Egypt's progress joins Morocco's in demonstrating that teams from Africa are genuine competitors in the latter stages of a World Cup. The Pharaohs have made history — and they now have the platform to chase something even greater.
