Harvey Elliott's place at Liverpool appears increasingly uncertain, with the 23-year-old omitted from the squad entirely for the club's opening Premier League fixture at Newcastle United — raising serious questions about whether he has a long-term future at Anfield.

Liverpool have received no offers for Elliott, and his absence from Sunday's matchday squad was not linked to transfer negotiations or injury. Yet with the transfer window set to close within days and further attacking reinforcements expected at Anfield, the situation points strongly toward a departure.

A pre-season that raised hopes

Elliott had spoken openly during Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States, describing his loan spell at Aston Villa as "tough" and framing this summer as something of a fresh start. His return to Anfield during a friendly against Monaco — when all four sides of the ground gave him a standing ovation — illustrated just how warmly supporters regard him.

He started Liverpool's first pre-season fixture under new head coach Andoni Iraola in Nashville, and again in New York against Wrexham four days later. However, as World Cup players returned to training, Elliott dropped out of the starting lineup and his standing in the squad hierarchy became apparent.

Iraola himself spoke encouragingly about the midfielder in his first press conference, praising his attitude and early return to pre-season. "I've seen him with this eagerness to show himself. He will have a chance during the pre-season. He came one week earlier and I hope we can see him in a good place," the head coach said.

The Villa loan that cost him a season

Last season's loan move to Aston Villa proved deeply damaging to Elliott's development. He made only nine appearances, totalling just 277 minutes, after Villa decided against triggering an obligation to sign him permanently for £35 million — a clause that would have activated after 10 appearances. Manager Unai Emery described the situation as "embarrassing" for all involved.

Those close to Villa spoke highly of Elliott's professionalism and positive attitude throughout, and the midfielder himself returned early to Liverpool ahead of pre-season despite what had clearly been a personally difficult year.

Elliott had joined Villa the previous summer seeking regular game-time after making just one Premier League start during Liverpool's title-winning 2024-25 season under Arne Slot. Instead, the loan achieved the opposite of its intention.

"I don't wish it upon any other player, because it's not nice at all," Elliott said of the experience.

What next for Elliott?

Elliott's contract expires next summer, which adds urgency to a resolution. With regular first-team football unlikely at Liverpool, a move — whether to a Premier League club lower in the table or to a side in Europe — looks the most logical outcome.

His quality is not in question. The attacking midfielder has contributed 15 goals and 21 assists for Liverpool across all competitions, including a match-winning goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the season PSG won the UEFA Champions League. He is technically accomplished and willing to take risks in possession.

He was also named player of the tournament when England's Under-21 side won the European Championship in 2025. At 23, a second consecutive lost season would be a significant setback to a career that carries genuine promise.

Speaking in the United States during pre-season, Elliott acknowledged the need to act in his own interests. "Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, doing what's right for me," he said. "Whether that's staying here and fighting for my place or potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at the moment until I get some more intel."

The window is closing. A decision, one way or another, cannot be far away.
