England Eye Potential Portugal Showdown After Commanding Croatia Victory

1 hour ago·2 min

England launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 4-2 victory over Croatia in their Group L opener, setting up a potential last-16 meeting with Portugal that will send a shiver through the Three Lions' fanbase.

The match was not without its nervy moments — England surrendered their lead twice in the first half — but Thomas Tuchel's side came out for the second half with a ferocity Croatia could not contain.

Bellingham and Rashford seal the deal

The turnaround came within minutes of the restart. Jude Bellingham capped a flowing 23-pass move with a composed finish just two minutes into the second half, giving England control they would not relinquish. Marcus Rashford then wrapped up the points with five minutes of normal time remaining, making it a convincing three-point haul.

A familiar foe could await

With Croatia considered England's most difficult group-stage opponent on paper, Tuchel's men will feel confident about topping Group L. Should they finish first, England would face the third-placed side from Group K — a group containing Portugal, Colombia, DR Congo, and Uzbekistan.

A second-round encounter with Portugal would carry the heavy weight of history. In Euro 2004, England fell to Portugal on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Two years later at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Wayne Rooney's red card became the enduring image as England again exited in a shootout against Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates.

Portugal are widely expected to navigate past Uzbekistan, but their group also includes a Colombia side that poses a genuine challenge. There is every chance Portugal do not finish third, which would remove that particular threat entirely. DR Congo or Uzbekistan would represent more manageable opposition, and Colombia are a team this England squad has already demonstrated they can handle.

After this performance against Croatia, however, Tuchel's side look capable of facing anyone the draw sends their way — even Ronaldo himself.
