England's Road to the World Cup Final Takes Shape After Mexico Thriller

55 minutes ago·2 min

England are through to the World Cup quarter-finals after a breathtaking 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, setting up a potential run all the way to the final in New Jersey on 19 July.

Thomas Tuchel's side made history in Mexico City, handing the hosts only their third-ever defeat at the iconic venue — a ground where Argentina knocked England out in the 1986 quarter-finals. The win keeps England's unbeaten record intact across all five of their matches at this tournament, with their only dropped points coming in a draw against Ghana in Group L.

Ten men, three points

The result was made all the more remarkable by the fact that England played most of the second half with ten men. Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card in the 54th minute for violent conduct following a challenge on Jesus Gallardo, just as Mexico were pressing to claw back from a 2-0 deficit. Tuchel's squad dug deep and held on to claim a famous win in front of a hostile crowd.

Norway next at Hard Rock Stadium

England now face Norway in the quarter-finals at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on 11 July, with kick-off scheduled for 10pm UK time. Erling Haaland and his teammates arrive on the back of a stunning 2-1 victory over five-time world champions Brazil at MetLife Stadium on Sunday — a result that secured Norway's first-ever quarter-final appearance at a World Cup.

Should England get past Norway, a semi-final awaits — their second in eight years — and that clash could pit them against Lionel Messi and Argentina, who remain in contention on the same side of the draw.

A formidable path on the other side

England's potential opponents in the final would offer no relief. Six nations are still alive on the opposite side of the draw, including reigning holders France and Morocco, who are already confirmed for a quarter-final showdown after Morocco eliminated the Netherlands. The USA and Belgium meet in their last-16 clash on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to face whoever emerges from Portugal versus Spain.

The winner of that half of the draw would line up against England in the final at MetLife Stadium. Also still alive are Egypt, Switzerland, and Colombia, who contest the remaining last-16 tie to determine France and Morocco's quarter-final opponent.

If England are to lift the trophy for the first time since 1966, there will be no shortcuts — only a gauntlet of the world's best standing between Tuchel's side and glory.
