Asante Kotoko have confirmed the appointment of South African coach Eric Tinkler as their new head coach, with the Ghanaian giants looking to make a major impact domestically and on the continental stage in the 2026/27 season.

Tinkler, who captained Bafana Bafana and earned 48 international caps during his playing career, takes charge immediately and brings over three decades of experience in elite football as both a player and manager.

A coaching career built on continental ambition

The 54-year-old arrives with one of the most extensive coaching résumés in South African football. He has managed Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Cape Town City, Maritzburg United, and Bidvest Wits — some of the biggest clubs in the country.

His time at Orlando Pirates saw him steer the club to the CAF Champions League final, while at SuperSport United he reached the CAF Confederation Cup final. He also claimed multiple domestic honours, including the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout.

A player who knew the grandest stages

Before stepping into the dugout, Tinkler enjoyed a distinguished playing career. He was part of Bafana Bafana's historic squad that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996 and represented South Africa at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. At club level, he featured in England, Italy, and Portugal, turning out for Barnsley, Cagliari, and Vitoria de Setubal.

Kotoko's continental ambitions drive the appointment

Asante Kotoko stated that Tinkler's appointment is a direct reflection of the club's determination to build a technical structure capable of competing for honours both at home and across Africa. He will work alongside Director of Football Stanley Menzo Purl as the club strengthens its football operations.

Board Chairman James Osei Brown welcomed the news warmly.
