Rene Meulensteen, who served as assistant manager at Manchester United, has urged the club to avoid selling Marcus Rashford to a direct Premier League competitor, warning that such a move could seriously damage the Red Devils.

Speaking to Andy's Bet Club, Meulensteen drew a comparison to the sale of Scott McTominay, cautioning United not to repeat what some now view as an error of judgment.

"Would selling Rashford be a repeat of selling Scott McTominay? I don't think people see McTominay the same way. He moved because the club wanted to sell, and he has done brilliantly since. People might wonder if United sold him too early, but selling Rashford to a direct competitor like Arsenal or Chelsea could really hurt you."

Meulensteen insisted that Rashford still has real value to offer at the top level. He argued that if United do decide to part with the forward, the move should be to a club abroad rather than arming a Premier League rival.

"He is still a player who can make a difference. Ideally, if United sell him, they should sell him abroad."

Carrick's role in Rashford's future

Meulensteen also pointed to Michael Carrick as a key figure in determining whether Rashford has a future at Old Trafford, suggesting the two share a bond built on mutual respect.

"Carrick is the type of person who recognizes Marcus's qualities. They need an open conversation so Marcus understands what is required. Carrick won't want to bring someone back if it creates another problem. If the clarity is there, he would be happy to bring him back into the fold."

United have so far been reluctant to sanction a sale to a domestic rival, leaving the door open for Rashford to return to the squad ahead of the new season.

Rashford's stint at Barcelona last season was among the most fruitful stretches of his senior career. The academy graduate registered 14 goals and 14 assists across 49 appearances — a goal contribution every 1.75 matches — strengthening the case for those who believe he still has plenty to offer at the highest level.
