FIFA Clarifies World Cup 2026 Water Bottle Policy After Fan Backlash

2 hours ago·2 min

FIFA has moved to clarify its water bottle policy for the FIFA World Cup 2026, confirming that fans will be permitted to carry sealed disposable plastic water bottles into stadiums — but that hard-sided reusable containers remain prohibited.

The governing body drew sharp criticism after reversing its own stadium code of conduct just seven days before the tournament kicked off on 11 June. The original policy had explicitly allowed empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles of up to one litre capacity inside venues.

What is and is not allowed

World Cup 2026 chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi outlined the updated position in clear terms. "Each spectator can bring with them one 20 ounce (560ml) soft, plastic disposable factory-sealed water bottle into the stadium," he said. "What is not allowed are hard-sided resealable water containers, which could pose a safety and security risk."

FIFA's original late policy change had banned bottles — alongside cups, jars, and cans — citing concerns about fans using objects as projectiles. The revised clarification draws a distinction between rigid containers and soft, factory-sealed disposable bottles, the latter of which are now explicitly permitted.

Health concerns raised by experts

The initial ban had alarmed heat safety specialists. At least one expert warned that restricting personal water supplies would "clearly heighten the risk of heat-related health incidents" for spectators — a significant concern given the summer conditions expected across the tournament's host venues.

FIFA has sought to address those concerns by confirming that water will be available for purchase inside stadiums, with a commitment that prices will not exceed standard venue rates.

The ban on hard-sided bottles follows a precedent set at the previous World Cup in Qatar, where fans were similarly prevented from bringing their own bottles into stadiums.
