Flick Raises Fitness Concerns Over Raphinha's Brazil Call-Up

1 hour ago·2 min

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has voiced his frustration over the decision to call up captain Raphinha for international duty with Brazil, citing ongoing concerns about the winger's fitness following a recent injury.

The worry traces back to September's international window, when Raphinha returned to the Catalan club carrying a muscular injury sustained while representing Brazil. That experience has left Flick wary of a repeat scenario as Barcelona enter one of the most demanding stretches of the season.

Flick's concerns in his own words

Speaking on the matter, Flick confirmed he had already discussed the situation with Barcelona sporting director Deco. "I've spoken to Deco. He's a very important player, and after the break from the last international window, he returned injured. It's not the best situation," the German coach said.

Flick acknowledged, however, that there is little he can do once a national team issues a call-up. "That's how things are, we can't do anything about it. Rapha has the club in his heart, but if the national team calls him up, he wants to be there," he added.

The Barcelona manager made clear his hope that Brazil's coaching staff would handle Raphinha's minutes carefully. "Everyone wants to help the Brazil team. If we can manage his playing time, I'd be happy. It's not ideal to go back and forth to Singapore. But it's out of my hands," Flick said.

Brazil's upcoming friendlies

Raphinha is set to travel to Asia, where Brazil face Japan and Singapore in two friendly matches in Kallang — scheduled for November 14 and 17. The distance and travel demands of the trip are an additional source of concern for Flick, who has placed a premium on keeping his squad fresh and fit throughout the season.
