Four England Players Face Semi-Final Ban Ahead of Norway Quarter-Final

England head into Saturday's FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Norway with four key players balancing on a yellow-card knife edge — each one suspension away from missing a potential semi-final.
FIFA's revised booking rules for this tournament state that caution tallies are wiped clean after the quarter-final stage. That means a second yellow card picked up in either the round of 32 or the round of 16 would trigger a one-match ban, ruling a player out of the last four — but not the final, should their team progress that far.
The four players on the tightrope
Jude Bellingham leads the list of those at risk. The midfielder received a yellow card for a reckless challenge in the first half of England's last-32 meeting with DR Congo, a match ultimately settled by a Harry Kane brace that secured a nervy 2-1 win for Thomas Tuchel's side.
Vice-captain Declan Rice is also walking the line, having been cautioned for a high challenge just 50 seconds into the round-of-16 clash with co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca.
Centre-back Marc Guehi picked up his booking after protesting the award of a second-half penalty to Mexico — a moment that was briefly and incorrectly attributed to Kane in a BBC graphic during the broadcast. Left-back Nico O'Reilly rounds out the quartet, booked moments later for an off-the-ball incident involving Mexico defender Jorge Sanchez.
Tuchel's balancing act
All four players started both of England's knockout fixtures, making the task facing Tuchel a genuine headache. Bellingham has been the standout performer of the tournament, netting four goals and contributing an assist for Kane's strike against Panama — his absence would be felt acutely.
England's path to the quarter-final was anything but smooth. Beyond the late drama against Congo, the Three Lions survived an extraordinary contest at the Azteca, beating Mexico 3-2 through two rapid Bellingham goals and a Kane penalty. Their resilience was tested further when Jarell Quansah was sent off early in the second half, forcing England to defend their lead with ten men. Quansah misses Saturday's match, though the FA are reported to be weighing an appeal.
Midfielder Jordan Henderson was also booked — for interfering with play as an unused substitute — but will play no further part in the tournament after sustaining a freak arm injury during the post-match celebrations against Mexico.
With Atlanta hosting a potential semi-final next Wednesday, Tuchel is unlikely to rotate any of his key men on Saturday. If England are to reach the last four, they will almost certainly need Bellingham, Rice, Guehi, and O'Reilly at their best — and in one piece.
