Newcastle United Close In on Ajax Teenager Sean Steur

1 hour ago·2 min

Newcastle United are on the verge of completing a deal for Ajax midfielder Sean Steur, with the 18-year-old emerging as one of the most promising young talents in the Eredivisie this season.

The move comes after the Magpies received a significant financial boost from the sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth up to £100 million. Having already spent £43 million to bring in Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Toure, Newcastle are now understood to be closing in on Steur for a fee that could climb to around £23 million.

Rapid rise at Ajax

Steur only penned a contract extension with Ajax last summer — an agreement that runs until 2028 — but the Dutch club now find themselves in a somewhat exposed negotiating position as the teenager attracts serious interest from across Europe.

The academy product made his senior debut in December before rapidly cementing a place in the starting lineup. A few weeks after his debut, he featured from the start as Ajax defeated Feyenoord in the De Klassieker.

Elite numbers for his age

His statistics this season underline the scale of his talent. According to Opta, among Eredivisie midfielders who began the campaign aged 18 or under, Steur ranked first in three key categories: chances created (15), total carries (231), and duel success rate (56.8 percent).

He also placed second for passes completed (623), passing accuracy (89.7 percent), tackles (20), possession won (49), and duels won (46) — numbers that paint the picture of a technically accomplished and physically competitive midfielder who is already operating at a high level.

If the deal goes through, Steur would become one of the most exciting young arrivals in the Premier League this summer.
