Gilberto Mora: Mexico's Teenage Sensation Targeting England Upset at the 2026 World Cup

Mexico are unbeaten, unscored against, and playing on home soil — and at the heart of their momentum is a 17-year-old from Tijuana who could yet prove to be England's biggest problem in the Round of 16.

Javier Aguirre's side have swept through the group stage with four wins from four at the FIFA World Cup 2026, dispatching South Africa, South Korea, Czechia, and Ecuador without conceding a single goal. England, meanwhile, required a Harry Kane-inspired performance to see off DR Congo in Atlanta and advance.

A record-breaker still in his teens

Gilberto Mora is no ordinary teenager. He holds the distinction of being the youngest player and youngest scorer in Liga MX history, as well as Mexico's youngest-ever international debutant. He is also the youngest member of any squad at this 48-team tournament.

Despite only recently celebrating his 17th birthday, Mora has been a consistent threat for his Liga MX club and earned a starting berth from Aguirre in the Round of 32 clash against Ecuador — a signal of just how much faith the manager places in him.

Shining before the World Cup

Mora arrived at this tournament with senior-level pedigree already behind him. At the 2025 Under-20 World Cup, he delivered an assist in the opening match against Brazil, scored twice against Spain, netted the only goal of the game against eventual champions Morocco, and contributed another assist against Chile in the knockout rounds.

Those performances underlined not just his technical quality but his composure when it matters most — a rare trait in a player so young.

Small in stature, enormous in impact

Compact and direct, Mora combines sharp movement with a willingness to shoot at every opportunity and a fearlessness in the tackle that belies his age and slight frame. With Mexico already carrying injuries to key players heading into the tournament, Aguirre has leaned on his teenage prodigy — and Mora has responded emphatically.

England will need to prepare carefully for the pocket-sized attacker when the two sides meet in Mexico City. On this form, Mora is not merely a curiosity — he is a genuine match-winner.
