Guehi's Fitness Scare Clouds England's World Cup Quarter-Final Preparations

Marc Guehi is facing a race against time to be fit for England's FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Norway in Miami on Saturday, after picking up a hamstring strain during the round-of-16 victory over Mexico.
The Manchester City defender missed England's final training session in Kansas City, Sky Sports News understands, although head coach Thomas Tuchel has not abandoned hope that Guehi could still start. Guehi was spotted walking around the perimeter of the pitch at England's Swope Soccer training base on Thursday, but he was unable to join the rest of the squad on the grass.
Burn waiting in the wings
Should Guehi fail to recover in time, Dan Burn is pushing hard for a starting place. The defender entered the fray in the 75th minute at the Estadio Azteca and produced a commanding display, registering six clearances — the most by any substitute at a World Cup since records began in 1966.
That showing has caught Tuchel's attention as he weighs up how best to contain Norway's talisman, Erling Haaland, in the physical contest that awaits.
Rice and James also monitored closely
Declan Rice remains a concern after being struck down by a stomach complaint following England's trip to Mexico. He has been kept away from the rest of the squad as a precautionary measure, but England's medical staff are understood to be optimistic he will be available for the quarter-final after receiving fluids and medication. No other England player is reported to have been affected.
Reece James is also in doubt. The right-back has been unable to train with the squad for nearly three weeks due to a hamstring injury, and while he is said to be eager to play, Tuchel must consult his medical team before deciding whether to risk him. Starting James carries the danger of aggravating the injury, which could end his tournament entirely.
Quansah banned for two matches
England's defensive options have been further reduced after Jarell Quansah was handed a two-match suspension following his red card against Mexico. The Bayer Leverkusen centre-back was dismissed after a VAR review judged his challenge on Jesus Gallardo in the second half to constitute serious foul play — even as England held on for a dramatic 3-2 victory.
FIFA's disciplinary committee confirmed the ban on Thursday, ruling that Quansah had breached article 14 of the FIFA disciplinary code. The suspension rules him out of Saturday's quarter-final against Norway and, if England advance, a potential semi-final against either Argentina or Switzerland.
