Guimarães Requests Newcastle Exit as Arsenal Prepare Fresh Bid

1 hour ago·2 min

Bruno Guimarães has formally requested a transfer away from Newcastle United, with Arsenal moving quickly to position themselves as the front-runners to sign the Brazil international midfielder.

Guimarães, who joined Newcastle from Lyon in 2022, has been on Arsenal's radar throughout the summer transfer window. The Premier League champions had weighed up moves for either Guimarães or his former Newcastle team-mate Sandro Tonali, who ultimately completed a £92.5m switch to Tottenham Hotspur.

During preliminary discussions over the financial terms of a potential deal, a figure of around £60m was initially communicated to Guimarães' representatives. Although Newcastle are yet to receive a formal approach from Arsenal, Mikel Arteta's side are now preparing to submit a concrete offer for the 28-year-old.

World Cup exit adds to Guimarães' unsettled summer

The midfielder's summer has been turbulent. Guimarães missed a penalty for Brazil as they were eliminated from the World Cup in the last 16, falling to Norway on Sunday — a setback that adds further context to his desire to move on.

At this stage, Arsenal are understood to be in the market for just one leading central midfielder. Alongside Guimarães, Bournemouth's Alex Scott and Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi remain under consideration as alternatives.

Newcastle reluctant to lose their captain

Newcastle are firmly opposed to selling Guimarães, who serves as the club's captain and talisman. The Tyneside club have already parted ways with Tonali and Anthony Gordon during this transfer window, making any further departure a significant concern.

The broader midfield market has been exceptionally active this summer. Manchester City agreed a club-record £116m deal to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, while West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes also moved to Tottenham Hotspur for £85m.

Age and squad dynamics could shape Arsenal's valuation

With Guimarães set to turn 29 in November, his age is expected to be a key consideration in determining how much Arsenal would be prepared to pay. The Gunners are unlikely to meet a premium price for a player approaching 30.

Any incoming central midfielder would trigger departures from Arsenal's current squad. Denmark international Christian Norgaard, 32, is someone the club would be open to selling, should an offer arrive. The move could also prompt fresh questions about Martin Zubimendi's standing as a guaranteed starter under Arteta next season.
