Manchester United Seal £50m Deal for Chelsea's Andrey Santos

1 hour ago·2 min

Manchester United have struck a deal worth up to £50 million with Chelsea to sign Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, according to BBC Sport.

Talks moved at pace after United signalled their interest over the weekend, with the agreement finalised within days. The transfer structure sees United pay an upfront fee of £48 million, with a further £2 million available through add-ons described as achievable. Chelsea have also secured a 10 percent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

Santos has been cleared for a medical at United. His compatriot Ederson is also scheduled to undergo a medical before completing his separate £35 million move to United from Atalanta, a deal delayed by Brazil's elimination from the World Cup.

Filling a midfield void

The signing addresses a pressing concern at Old Trafford. United made central midfield a priority this summer following the departure of Casemiro, whose contract expired at the end of last season. The former Real Madrid veteran leaves a significant gap in Michael Carrick's squad.

Manuel Ugarte had been expected to depart, but the Uruguay international is now sidelined for an extended spell after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage — removing him from United's plans entirely.

United also pursued Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, but the asking price climbed beyond £110 million, making the deal unworkable. They then turned their attention to West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, only to see him choose Tottenham after the north London club tabled a guaranteed fee of £85 million.

With Kobbie Mainoo still involved with England at the World Cup, United were facing the prospect of opening their pre-season against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July with Mason Mount as the sole recognised senior midfielder available to Carrick.

Chelsea's summer of departures

For Chelsea, the sale of Santos represents a third notable exit of the summer. Marc Cucurella has already departed to Real Madrid, while Tyrique George has joined Everton. The Santos deal adds further to a significant reshaping of the Chelsea squad ahead of the new campaign.
