Gustavo Tejera to Referee Australia vs Egypt in World Cup Round of 32

2 hours ago·2 min

The FIFA World Cup Round of 32 is nearing its end, with the clash between Australia and Egypt standing as one of the final three fixtures in the stage.

For Australia, the best result the side has ever achieved at a World Cup is reaching the Round of 16 — a feat they have managed on two occasions. Egypt, meanwhile, celebrated a historic landmark this tournament, claiming their first-ever World Cup victory with a 3-1 triumph over New Zealand.

Uruguayan officials take charge

Gustavo Tejera, a 38-year-old Uruguayan official, has been appointed as referee for tonight's fixture. By profession, Tejera works as an insurance broker, but his officiating career spans competitions including the Saudi Pro League, the Copa America, and CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers.

This assignment marks Tejera's second appearance at the tournament — he previously refereed the group-stage encounter between Mexico and South Korea.

Tejera has built a reputation as an uncompromising referee. Over his career, he has issued a remarkable 1,733 yellow cards, averaging just over five per match. He was noticeably more restrained during his earlier outing at this tournament, however, brandishing only two yellow cards throughout that game.

He will be supported on the touchlines by fellow Uruguayans Carlos Barreiro and Nicolas Taran as assistant referees. Fourth official duties fall to Sandro Scharer, while Stephane De Almeida serves as reserve assistant referee — both officials from Switzerland.

What's at stake

The winner of tonight's contest advances to the Round of 16, where they will face either Argentina or Cape Verde — a match scheduled later the same evening. Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates are widely expected to progress from that tie, and would pose a formidable test for whichever side emerges from the Australia–Egypt clash.

Should either team navigate that challenge, a quarter-final against Switzerland, Colombia, or Ghana would follow.
