Athletic Bilbao and Ghana forward Iñaki Williams has confirmed his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional chapter of his career to a close. Williams shared the news on Friday through a statement posted on his X account.

"I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end," the 32-year-old wrote, signing off his message with the Ghanaian word for thank you — Medaase.

Gratitude and pride

In his farewell message, Williams expressed deep gratitude to Ghana and its supporters. "I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt," he said.

He also described what representing the Black Stars meant to him on a personal level. "Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest."

Williams closed his statement with a pledge of continued loyalty: "I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am. Always Ghana."

From Spain to the Black Stars

Born in Spain to Ghanaian parents, Williams made a solitary appearance for Spain in 2016 before switching his international allegiance to Ghana in 2022. The move allowed him to compete at two FIFA World Cups and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations while wearing the Black Stars jersey.

His younger brother Nico, who also plays for Athletic Bilbao, continues to represent Spain at international level.
