Infantino Has Attended 37 Matches — and Counting — at the 2026 World Cup

1 hour ago·3 min

Gianni Infantino is on a remarkable tour of North America this summer, crisscrossing the continent to take in as much of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as possible. By the time the tournament reached its first break — four weeks after the opening fixture — the FIFA president had been present at 37 of the 96 matches played, attending roughly 38.5 percent of all games.

Forty-three thousand miles and counting

Infantino's movements have been tracked by Brazilian outlet UOL, which reports he has logged more than 43,000 miles of travel aboard a Gulfstream G650ER private jet provided by Qatar Airways, one of the tournament's official sponsors. FIFA has confirmed it covers all of his travel expenses.

The aircraft has been fitted with an office, and some reports suggest Infantino prefers sleeping on board rather than in hotels — allowing him to compress travel, work, and rest into a single airborne routine.

The pace has been relentless. He has averaged 1.37 matches per day since the tournament kicked off, and on several occasions managed to attend two games in a single day. On June 23, for example, he watched England's goalless draw with Ghana in Boston before flying north to Toronto for Panama vs Croatia the same evening.

A significant carbon footprint

The constant travel comes with an environmental cost. According to the BBC, Infantino's carbon footprint over the first two weeks of the competition was equivalent to that of 78 average people over an entire year.

Every stadium visited at least once

Despite the scrutiny, Infantino has made it his mission to experience the full breadth of this expanded, 48-team tournament. He has visited all 16 host stadiums at least once, spanning cities from Miami to Mexico City, Atlanta to Vancouver.

With the double-match days now behind them, and eight games remaining before the final, it is conceivable that Infantino attends every remaining fixture — which would bring his total to 45 matches, or 43.27 percent of the tournament's 104 games.
