Ipswich Town have secured the signing of Portuguese defensive midfielder Florentino Luis from Burnley for an undisclosed fee, handing him a five-year contract at Portman Road.

The 26-year-old made 31 league appearances for Burnley last season as the club suffered relegation from the Premier League. Ipswich, themselves newly promoted to the top flight, beat fellow newcomers Hull City to his signature.

The Portuguese midfielder expressed his enthusiasm for the move. "It feels brilliant to be a part of this club," Florentino said. "I like how the club sees the future and there are a lot of good players here. I can bring experience and balance to the team, between defence and attack, and I like to bring the connection."

Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil was equally upbeat about the acquisition. "He brings experience of playing in the Premier League as well as other major competitions in Europe, including the Champions League, and makes us stronger in central midfield," O'Neil said.

A path through Benfica and the Premier League

Florentino's transfer to Burnley from Benfica was initially a loan, only becoming permanent in June through an obligation-to-buy clause reported at £20.8 million. He marked his Clarets debut against Liverpool in September and went on to become a cornerstone of then-manager Scott Parker's side, despite their failure to preserve their top-flight status.

Before arriving in England, Florentino helped Benfica claim Portugal's Primeira Liga titles in 2019 and 2023, partnering with Chelsea and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez during that run. He also collected the Portuguese League Cup in 2025.

At international level, Florentino has represented Portugal at every youth stage from Under-15 through to Under-21.
