Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has moved to ease concerns over Bradley Barcola, confirming the winger experienced only cramps — not a serious calf injury — during the club's 2-1 UEFA Champions League win against Atlético Madrid.

Barcola went down clutching his left calf in the 60th minute of what was his full debut for Liverpool, prompting immediate anxiety among fans and observers watching on.

Fitness being managed carefully

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Iraola explained that Barcola had not played any pre-season football with Paris Saint-Germain before completing his £123 million move to Liverpool, meaning the coaching staff are still assessing his match sharpness.

"We are kind of rushing him a little bit," Iraola admitted. "We wanted him there, but at the end we decided to say give us what you have — then that's the most he has. Let's see how they recover for the next one."

Barcola's impact impresses Iraola

Despite the early withdrawal, Iraola made clear he was pleased with what Barcola produced. The French winger looked threatening throughout his time on the pitch and created two clear opportunities against Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Iraola also reflected on the broader challenge of facing Diego Simeone's side, describing them as technically gifted in midfield and difficult to press. He pointed to a now-familiar pattern of Liverpool finding comebacks — as they did against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle — while acknowledging there is still work to do at the start of matches.

"I was enjoying it. They're a very good team. Technically, in the middle, lovely players. It is not easy to press those players as they have quality," Iraola said. "They have been playing together forever."
