Isak, Barcola, and Wirtz Shine as Liverpool Overcome Brighton

1 hour ago·4 min

Liverpool secured a comfortable victory over Brighton, with standout performances from Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola, and Florian Wirtz driving the win. Here is how every player fared on the day.

Liverpool player ratings

Alisson – 7. Rarely troubled in the first half, though a careless pass from the back almost invited punishment when Yasin Ayari struck the post. The goalkeeper will be pleased with the clean sheet.

Ronald Araujo – 7. Showed impressive strength in the build-up to Liverpool's opening goal and remained reliable throughout. Went close to scoring himself but was denied by the keeper.

Jeremy Jacquet – 7. Composed on the ball and delivered another assured display, chipping in with key blocks to protect the backline.

Virgil van Dijk – 7. Bounced back from a below-par midweek outing to produce a characteristically commanding performance, contributing to another Premier League clean sheet.

Milos Kerkez – 6. Faced a challenging afternoon against Diego Gomez and did not always have the better of that duel, but ultimately played his part in a defensive effort that kept Brighton scoreless.

Ryan Gravenberch – 7. Consistent and industrious, particularly impressive given that Liverpool spent long spells without the ball.

Alexis Mac Allister – 7. Among Liverpool's most dependable performers this season. Some stray passes were a minor blemish on an otherwise encouraging display from the Argentine.

Bradley Barcola – 8. A brilliant team player as much as a goal threat. He created Isak's strike with an excellent lay-off and tormented Olivier Boscagli from start to finish — doing everything but find the net himself.

Florian Wirtz – 8. Full of confidence and decisive in his movement. Unfortunate that his well-struck effort was ultimately credited as a Gross own goal. Caused Brighton difficulties throughout before leaving the field after receiving treatment.

Cody Gakpo – 7. A constant menace down his favoured left flank. Had two efforts saved and came within a whisker of registering an assist.

Alexander Isak – 7. Coolly converted in the right place at the right time to claim his sixth Premier League goal in as many matches. Not yet at his absolute peak, but those numbers will delight manager Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool substitutes

Nyoni (on 65', for Wirtz) – 7. Made an immediate impression with a strong challenge and continues to look like a teenager growing with every appearance.

Ngumoha (on 77', for Barcola) – N/A.

Koumas (on 77', for Isak) – N/A.

Tsimikas (on 88', for Kerkez) – N/A.

Brighton player ratings

Bart Verbruggen – 5. Produced several solid saves in the first half but was undone by a deflection for Liverpool's opener and had no answer to Isak's composed finish.

Ferdi Kadioglu – 5. Forced off as early as the 6th minute with a hip injury, limiting any meaningful contribution.

Luka Vuskovic – 6. Part of a defence that conceded in the Premier League for the first time since 16 September. The 19-year-old showed composure in possession despite the difficult result.

Lewis Dunk – 5. Battled hard alongside Vuskovic but Brighton's backline were ultimately punished by Liverpool's clinical finishing.

Olivier Boscagli – 4. A difficult afternoon — lost possession for Liverpool's second goal, struggled to cope with Barcola's pace and directness, collected a booking for a foul on the Frenchman just before half-time, and was substituted at the interval.

Pascal Gross – 5. Played in Ayari for what should have been an assist but did not cover himself in glory when his clearance fell to Wirtz, whose shot deflected off Gross and into the net.

Chema Andres – 6. Tidy and composed in possession before being withdrawn early in the second half after taking a knock.

Diego Gomez – 7. The pick of the Brighton midfielders. Threaded a fine through-ball to Gross for Ayari's chance and combined effectively with Joao Costinha throughout.

Yasin Ayari – 6. Squandered a golden opportunity when the scoreline was still 0-0 — a miss Brighton were made to rue almost immediately. Did hit the post with a decent effort later in the first half.

Maxim De Cuyper – 5. Subdued in the first half and dropped into a left-back role after the interval when Jack Hinshelwood entered the game.

Charalampos Kostoulas – 6. Involved regularly and always provided an option in attack, but never truly tested Alisson.

Brighton substitutes

Joao Costinha (on 6', for Kadioglu) – 6. Thrust into action from the first whistle after Kadioglu's early exit. Linked well with Gomez in attack but struggled to contain Gakpo on the opposite end.

Jack Hinshelwood (on 46', for Boscagli) – 6. Contributed positively after the break but could not inspire a Brighton comeback.

Yalcouye (on 54', for Andres) – 5. Found it difficult to get into the game after coming on.

Rutter (on 75', for Ayari) – N/A.
