Nigeria Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has settled the Messi versus Ronaldo debate — at least for himself — firmly backing Lionel Messi as the greatest of all time.

Speaking on the Beast Mode On Podcast, Iwobi reflected on his personal experiences facing both superstars and explained why Messi edges out Cristiano Ronaldo in his eyes.

The invisible force field

Iwobi recalled his first UEFA Champions League start, which came against FC Barcelona at the Nou Camp — a night surrounded by generational talent on all sides. "That's a tough one. It's tough for me. I always say, Messi," he admitted.

The Nigeria international described the atmosphere as overwhelming, with the Nou Camp crowd chanting Messi's name even as fellow superstars Neymar, Luis Suárez, Andrés Iniesta, Xavi, and Dani Alves shared the same pitch.

"Neymar is small and Messi is extra small, and I thought, no, there's no way someone like this has this much presence," Iwobi said. "Every time he had the ball, it was like he had a radius around him that no one could come close to."

The moment that ended up in every compilation

Iwobi revealed the encounter produced one of his most embarrassing — and most viral — moments on a football pitch. Tired of standing off Messi, he decided to press the Argentine directly, only to be left on the floor as Messi cut inside and glided past him.

"I tried to press him because I was tired of the force field he had around him," Iwobi said. "He cut in and went past me, and I slipped. It comes out on every Messi compilation and I go, 'Oh God', that's me again."

A different kind of greatness from Ronaldo

Iwobi did not dismiss Cristiano Ronaldo, acknowledging that facing the Portuguese forward carried an intimidating aura of its own. However, he noted that by the time they met, Ronaldo's game had evolved into one built on efficiency — arriving in the box and finishing, rather than the all-court dominance Messi displayed at the Nou Camp that night.

For Iwobi, the memory of that Champions League evening in Barcelona — the chants, the superstars, and the slipping challenge — is all the evidence he needs.
